Hospitality king Maz Salt and his wife, Melbourne University architecture lecturer Catherine Duggan, are selling their Robyn Boyd-designed modernist house in Black Rock.

Credited as a major influence on Melbourne’s laneway bar culture, Mr Salt opened CBD venues Ferdydurke and Section 8 plus Brunswick East’s The B. East.

Named Bridgford House, their circa-1954 home at 242 Beach Rd was Boyd’s most-expensive project of the era, a £9500 commission built for shipping agent Charles Bridgford and his wife Phyllis.

How do we determine housing affordability?

One of Australia’s most celebrated architects, Boyd was a main proponent of modernism in residential designs.

WHITEFOX Real Estate’s Michael Martin said when Salt and Ms Duggan purchased the four-bedroom home in 2018, they were bidding against developers.

“They bought it for the fear of someone knocking it down, as much as love of the home itself,” Mr Martin said.

Bridgford House was not heritage-listed when Ms Duggan and Salt bought but it is now, thanks to work they had put into having its historic status recognised, Mr Martin added.

He said the couple were selling because they are relocating overseas.

The Robin Boyd Foundation has been managing the house as a short-term accommodation rental on behalf of Salt and Ms Duggan since January.

Mr Martin described the abode as “probably one of the last true representations of Boyd architecture”.

“It is original as original can be,” he said.

Several modernist enthusiasts and budding architects have inspected the house, which features a sunroom and study plus a dining room, both with fireplaces.

The kitchen’s dining table extends to outside, while the main bedroom has an ensuite.

A second bathroom serves the other three bedrooms.

“Every single bedroom has a door to the outside,” Mr Martin said.

The paved garden features a fish pond, recently-updated fence and native Australian plants.

Other highlights include a 13.32KW solar system, rainwater tank, separate laundry, double carport and ample storage space.

Mr Martin said the home was located in an “incredible spot” close to Black Rock village, Black Rock Lifesaving Club, Black Rock Sailing Club, schools, public transport and golf courses.

Bridgford House is for sale via expressions of interest with a $2.9m-$3.19m asking range.
