Oakland, California producer and performing artist noaccordion, aka Onah Indigo, drops her new single/music video, “Welcome Diversity.”

Talking about the unique name of the project, Onah explains, “I call my project noaccordion for a reason. People have strong reactions to the instrument. Most people love it; it often reminds them of their cultural past. But some people can’t stand it. It’s a particular sound, designed to be played outdoors and loudly. I may not play it a few years from now. It may not appear in my repertoire. I don’t want to be defined by it.”

A multi-instrumentalist, noaccordion defies the limitations of genre by introducing club beats to underground MCs or freaky variations on mainstream key patterns to techno and drum ‘n’ bass.

Originally influenced by the wave of electronic music that swept Europe in the early ‘90s, noaccordion began exploring a wide range of genres, from samba to jazz. Later, international flavors infiltrated her beats.

noaccordion has performed at California’s Lightning in a Bottle Festival and Symbiosis Gathering, Nevada’s famous Burning Man Festival as well as well-known venues like San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom, The Bently Reserve, The Mint, and Public Works.

Past collaborations include Evan Fraser of Dirtwire, SkipWicked of Indubious, Eenor of Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade, and Stephen Suchan of Soohan.

“Welcome Diversity” rolls out on gleaming, swirling tones riding a conscious-hip-hop rhythm made up of taut, light percussion and a fat, vibrating bassline. noaccordion’s sing-song rapping flow gives the rhymes an emphatic delivery, while melodic vocal harmonies imbue the tune with psychedelic tangs.

“Find reliable sources / Propaganda runs courses / Firsthand from mouth / Keep distance and vows.”

Looking through a feminist lens, with “Welcome Diversity,” noaccordion reveals a profound perspective on patriarchy and racism.
