Union Berlin are nearing an agreement to sign Hertha Berlin midfielder Lucas Tousart. The midfielder is expected to move across the German capital and become Union’s seventh signing of the summer.

Urs Fischer’s squad has already been strengthened with, among others, the loan signings of Brenden Aaronson and David Datro Fofana from Leeds and Chelsea respectively, and also the addition of former West Ham midfielder Alex Kral.

On leaving Hertha BSC, Tousart will end an indifferent spell at the Olympiastadion. He was a club record signing in 2020, costing in excess of €20m from Lyon. At the time, the midfielder was the apex of entrepreneur Lars Windhorst’s heavy investment in the club and, alongside deals for Matheus Cunha, Krzysztok Piatek and Dodi Lukebakio, was suggestive of a new and exciting era.

Instead, Hertha have endured a tumultuous period in the years since, culminating in relegation from the Bundesliga in 2022-23, financial issues, and the exodus of much of their first team.

By contrast, Union have gone from strength to strength since promotion in 2019 and, following a fourth-placed finish last season, will be playing Champions League football for the first time in their history. And by a quirk of fate, because of UEFA restrictions that prevent them from playing their home games at the Stadion alte Forsterei, Union – and potentially Tousart – will also stage those Champions League matches at Hertha’s Olympiastadion.
