Terrifying footage has captured the moment a seven-story vacant building in the heart of Sydney collapsed as firefighters desperately try to contain the blaze.
The inferno erupted about 4pm today when the building, in Randle Lane near Central Station, became engulfed in flames.
At least 10 fire trucks are on the scene trying to get the blaze under control, amid fears neighbouring high-rise apartment blocks could go up in flames.
It’s understood at least 50 people have been evacuated, with reports the fire has already spread to one neighbouring complex.
Aerial footage taken by Nine News helicopters showed the moment a large chunk of the exterior upper wall and roof collapsed on a nearby building and the street below.

There were continuous crashing sounds heard at the scene by witnesses.
“It’s actually quite wild out on the streets, people everywhere and ash falling from the sky,” one witness told news.com.au.
“A tornado of black smoke has blanketed the area,” another witness said. “The building looks like the bottom of a fire pit.”
Firefighters have set up a large exclusion zone blocking off Elizabeth street, while shocked commuters lined the street.
“Please avoid roads near Randle Street, Surry Hills during your commute,” NSW Transport Minister Jo Heylen tweeted.
“Buses are being re-routed and light rail is not running between Moore Park and Circular Quay.
“Sydney Trains are currently operating as usual.”

Transport Management said motorists already in the area should follow directions of emergency services and allow plenty of extra travel time.
“Additionally, L2 and L3 light rail services are not running between Moore Park and Circular Quay,” they said.
“Passengers can consider catching trains or local bus services instead, however some buses are diverting due to the road closures.”
