Todd Bozeman Biography
Todd Bozeman is one of the most popular and richest Basketball Player who was born on December 5, 1963 in Washington, D.C., United States. Bozeman was forced out in the month of August, 1996 in just over two months prior to the start in the season 1996-1997. Bozeman admitted to that he had paid $30,000 over the course of 2 years for the family of Golden Bears recruit Jelani Gardner to enable them to travel away from home Mendocino to watch him play. As Gardner’s playing time decreased his parents decided to send Bozeman into the NCAA and Gardner later moved to Pepperdine. Gardner was also the victim of a sexual harassment complaint. Just prior to the announcement, he’d been told to stay clear from an ex- Cal student who claimed that he had made lewd phone calls and threats to her.
Morgan State was 4-26 the year before Bozeman arrived, but he quickly rebuilt the program and led it to new heights, making the NIT in 2008 and the school’s only NCAA appearances to date in 2009 and 2010. He was a three-time MEAC conference coach of the year. In 2009 he was named Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year, which is awarded to the country’s most outstanding mid-major basketball coach.
On March 20, 2019, Bozeman’s contract was not renewed, ending his tenure at Morgan State after 13 seasons.
Following an investigation that followed, Cal had to forfeit the entire 1994-95 season as well as only two games from the season 1995-1996. Also, the school canceled its place during the 1996 NCAA Tournament, and gave up to four scholarships between 1998 and 2000. The NCAA issued the eight year “show-cause” order on Bozeman. The order was in effect until 2005 the only NCAA member school was able to hire Bozeman until it had either consented to imposing sanctions on him or convince the NCAA that he’d completed the sentence. The NCAA was particularly harsh on Bozeman for lying to the school as well as NCAA administrators about his involvement when it came to making payments. Bozeman only confessed about the payments a week prior to the NCAA hearing, when it became clear that close family members would be in the mix. While the penalties were however, the NCAA considered the violations to be egregious enough to be able to consider the possibility of imposing more severe penalties were Bozeman was still employed at Cal.
Bozeman was previously the head coach at the University of California, Berkeley from 1993 until 1996. He was appointed an interim coach back in the month of February after Lou Campanelli was fired with 10 games remaining during the season. Bozeman led his team of Golden Bears to an upset of two-time National champion Duke at the end of round two of the 1993 tournament and became the youngest head coach (29 year old) ever to lead his group through the “Sweet Sixteen”. After the season, Bozeman was given the coach job on a per-permanent basis. Bozeman was the coach who led his team of Golden Bears to two more NCAA tournaments.
Bozeman returned to the collegiate ranks with Morgan State in 2006, becoming the first coach to return to Division I after being handed a show-cause. It had long been extremely difficult for coaches slapped with a show-cause to get back into the collegiate ranks even after the penalty expires, since many athletic directors and administrators looked askance at hiring anyone with such a serious penalty on his record.
